AIR BAG CONCERNS

They save your life, but there are fatal and non-fatal dangers involved with air bags too. For optimum safety:

1. Keep at least 10 inches of space between you and the steering column.
2. Always wear your seatbelt too.
3. Keep your hands at “9” and “5” on the steering wheel.
4. Don’t allow children less than 4 feet tall to ride in the front seat.
5. Do not put rear-facing infant or child seats in the front passenger side with an air bag.
6. If your air bag deploys, replace it with a factory model, not one from a salvage yard.

Although air bags do reduce deaths, they can cause injury to the face, head, neck, eyes, and hearing, and can cause skin burns. It feels like getting hit in the face with a baseball.

There are differences in air bag designs. The peripheral air bags with head protection are much more effective at reducing deaths in side-door impact. You can check to see how your vehicle’s air bags rate by going to www.highwaysafety.org.
